Hipponax, fr. 120 & 121
Hipponax is alleged to have had a feud with a sculptor, Bupalus, who had produced an unflattering caricature of the poet. The following two fragments are often assumed to belong together:
λάβετέ μεο ταἰμάτια, κόψω Βουπάλῳ τὸν ὀφθαλμόν.
ἀμφιδέξιος γάρ εἰμι κοὐκ ἁμαρτάνω κόπτων.
Take my coat; I’m going to knock Bupalus’s eye out.
For I’m good with both fists and I don’t miss the target with my blows!
