Reading at Random in Classical Literature

Empedocles, Purifications, fr. 141

A hexameter line quoted by Aulus Gellius (4.11.9) and attributed to various authors. It reflects the famous Pythagorean aversion to beans.

δειλοί, πάνδειλοι, κυάμων ἄπο χεῖρας ἔχεσθαι.

You wretches! You utter wretches! Keep your hands away from beans!
